Pilot study

How do you solve new problems? A study of reasoning and spatial ability in children and adults

We are developing short tests of reasoning and spatial ability for children (from 6 years) and adults, including people who are intellectually gifted. You will complete picture patterns (Matrices), balance scales (Weights), work with shape rules (Shape Keys), find hidden rules (Rule Finder), work out where objects go (Stations), imagine folded paper (Paper Folding) and put shapes together (Shape Assembly). The tests use only pictures and shapes, so they work across languages. They start very easy and get very hard – nobody is expected to solve everything.

Compare yourself with others of your age. Once enough people of your age group have taken a test, you will see after finishing it how your result compares with theirs.

You don’t have to do everything. Each test takes 3–15 minutes. You can take only some of the tests, or stop halfway and come back later. Every attempt helps.

Developed by Jaroslav Točík as part of doctoral research at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic).

Children under 15 take part only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Younger children may need a parent to read the instructions and fill in the form, but please let the child solve the tasks on their own – no hints, please.

How we handle your data (GDPR)

The test is anonymous: we do not store your name, e-mail or IP address. We store your answers, response times and the information from the form below. Your browser keeps a random identifier so that it recognises you when you return. The data are used for doctoral research and are processed on the website operator’s server. You can stop at any time; you can ask the website operator to delete your data by quoting the identifier shown on the results page.

Has the person taking the test been diagnosed with any of the following? (you can tick more than one)
